Client Challenge
The homeowners of a waterfront property in Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast, needed a flat area near the water for entertaining guests. The new deck was planned close to the home, but the lower garden area required elevation to match the deck's level. Additionally, the existing boat ramp needed to be integrated into the design.
Our Solution
Australian Retaining Walls recommended the Flush Face Garden Wall concrete block system for its durability and aesthetic appeal. The wall was designed to be 1 metre tall, providing the necessary elevation. To address the boat ramp, the wall was built around it, and steps were installed post-construction.
Additional Services:
- At the client's request, we also installed posts for their new fence. This early installation saved considerable effort later, as digging post holes into drainage gravel is notably difficult.
Construction Process:
- Demolition and Site Preparation: Any existing structures or obstructions were removed, and the site was prepared for the new wall.
- Footing Excavation: The base was excavated and prepared for laying the foundation.
- Wall Construction: The Flush Face Garden Wall blocks were laid on a concrete footing, and the wall was built up to the required height.
- Drainage System: A comprehensive drainage system was installed behind the wall, including 20mm drainage gravel and geotextile fabric, to ensure proper water management and prevent future erosion.
- Post Installation: Fence posts were installed concurrently to facilitate the client's future fencing project.
- Completion and Integration: Steps were built around the boat ramp, and the area was prepared for the next phases of construction by carpenters and landscapers.
Outcome
The new concrete retaining wall created a flat, functional area for entertaining near the water, seamlessly integrated with the existing boat ramp. The early installation of fence posts significantly eased the future fencing process. This transformation not only enhanced the property's usability but also its visual appeal, providing the homeowners with a beautiful and practical outdoor space.
