Client Challenge
The homeowner in Currumbin Valley, Gold Coast, faced a serious issue with their failing timber retaining wall. The main problem was the significant amount of rainwater running down from the surrounding raised gardens and lawns. Due to the absence of an effective drainage system, the timber walls had rotted over time. Despite it not having rained for a couple of weeks, the ground behind the wall was still wet, indicating poor drainage and the lack of gravel and drainage pipes.
Our Solution
Australian Retaining Walls recommended replacing the timber sleepers with Flush Face Garden Wall concrete blocks for enhanced durability and effective water management. The project began with the demolition of the old timber wall. A small amount of soil was then shaved from the embankment to accommodate the new concrete blocks. The construction process involved laying the base blocks on a concrete footing and stacking the remaining blocks on top. To address the drainage issue, a 65mm drainage pipe was installed behind the wall, with exit points created near existing drains. The pipe was covered with 20mm gravel, and geotextile fabric was used to separate the soil from the gravel to prevent silt from blocking the pipe.
Outcome
The installation of the concrete retaining wall effectively resolved the drainage issues that plagued the property. Additionally, an entranceway to the stairs leading up to the lawn area and garden shed was integrated into the wall, enhancing both functionality and aesthetics. The project not only improved the visual appeal of the Currumbin Valley property but also ensured that the area around the house remained dry, preventing future damp issues.
