Client Challenge
The homeowners in Gold Coast faced a significant challenge with their existing retaining wall. Poor access and the wall's location on top of a 1m high garden bed complicated the situation. Additionally, the old wall had to remain in place due to the high risk of the fence and a garden shed from the above property collapsing onto the client's land.
Our Solution
Australian Retaining Walls proposed constructing a Stone Masonry Wall using bush rock and mortar to address these challenges. This solution provided both stability and aesthetic appeal while ensuring safety for the surrounding structures.
Construction Process:

Site Preparation:
- Due to poor access, a makeshift ramp was fabricated to move the bush rock into position safely.

Wall Construction:
- The largest rocks were selected for the base to provide a solid foundation.
- The wall was built up to 1m in height, with the smallest rocks used as caps at the top for a finished look.

Drainage System:
- To combat excessive rainwater seeping from the top property, 20mm gravel was used to backfill the wall.
- 65mm drainage pipes were installed at 1m intervals to ensure effective water drainage and prevent water buildup behind the wall.
Outcome
The newly constructed Stone Masonry Wall provided a robust and visually appealing solution. The careful selection and placement of the rocks, combined with the effective drainage system, ensured long-term stability and functionality. The decision to leave the old wall in place minimized risks and maintained the integrity of the surrounding structures.
